Common Eye Conditions & Diseases

Keratoconus

The cornea should be shaped like a globe, but it can gradually take on a cylindrical shape in some individuals. This condition is called keratoconus, and it usually develops between the ages of 10 and 25.

Symptoms of this disease can take years to develop, and they can include distorted vision, sensitivity to bright light, and difficulties wearing contact lenses.

Optometrists may be able to correct initial symptoms with specialty contact lenses and eyeglasses. As keratoconus progresses, patients may require a cornea transplant.

Cataracts are a natural part of the ageing process. They develop as your eye’s lens becomes more rigid and opaque over time. This hardening eventually clouds the lens, affecting your vision.

In the beginning, your optometrist can prescribe glasses or contact lenses to correct vision loss. However, only surgery can remove cataracts and restore the vision they have obstructed.

The macula is at the centre of your retina. Its primary function is to provide sharp detail in the central part of your vision.

The ageing process can result in the deterioration of the macula, resulting in a loss of colour vision and an inability to see precise detail. This is called age-related macular degeneration.

Glaucoma generally affects older age groups, but it can occur at any age. It is a group of diseases that gradually affect your optic nerve, sometimes leading to blindness. Glaucoma advances slowly, and many patients don’t experience symptoms until its advanced stages.

Routine eye exams are an essential tool for helping diagnose and provide treatment for glaucoma. At this time, optometrists cannot repair vision damage caused by glaucoma, but can slow its progression if caught in the early stages.
