Dr. Loewen recently travelled to Port Antonio and Morant Bay, Jamaica, to provide eye care to these underserviced communities. She travelled with a team from Canadian Vision Services (CVC). While in the area, they treated about 1100 needy patients. All patients received free sunglasses to protect their eyes from the development of cataracts and macular degeneration. Patients requiring prescription glasses or reading glasses were given new glasses, free of charge. Patients needing treatment for ocular infections, allergies and glaucoma were given prescription eye drops. Around 50 patients were also in need of surgery for cataracts and pterygium removal and arrangements were made to service these patients as well. All of the patients were very grateful for the services provided.
